David here.   Today is Grant's 6th birthday.  Melanie and I are so thankful that he continues to do well.  When he was diagnosed just over 3 years ago, the doctors told us that he had a less than 50-50 chance to make it to his 6th birthday.  We have a long way to go, but today is a day to celebrate.

Grant's birthday party was Saturday.  Many of his classmates, friends and family were able to attend.  Melanie planned a fantastic party, highlighted by Darth Vader and a Jedi performing and putting Grant through Jedi training.  The kids had a ball.   Claire was such a proud big sister. She loves her little brother so much.

While we celebrate Grant's birthday and his continuing to be in remission, we also think of the friends we have lost over the last three years--Aidan, Preston, Trey, Simon,  McKenzie, Michael, Natalia, Rosa and others.  These families are constantly in our prayers and thoughts.    We also think of our friends who are still fighting, Presley, Alden, Laurel, Devin, Emily, Bucky  and so many others.  We feel a strong bond with these families as we all try to make it through this challenging time.

Grant's last "in-treatment" bone marrow test will be in the last week of July.  The plan is to stop Gleevec, the one remaining oral chemotherapy, at that time.  Until June 2014, Grant will continue to have his blood checked monthly and his bone marrow checked quarterly to make sure his is still in remission.

If you havent registered in the bone marrow registry, please do it today.  It is so easy to do and you t might save the life of a child with cancer.
